What Are “Natural Dyes”

Natural dyes are chemical compounds that can be found in certain plants, insects, fungi, lichen, and earth.  The work on this page shares some of my exploration with natural dyes unlocked from various organic material, mostly sourced from plants, including Black Walnut, Japanese Indigo, & Madder Root to name a few.

A variety of results can be achieved from one dye source depending on the type of fiber and use of chemical modifiers.

I explore dyes that have been used across the world, spanning a variety of climates and cultural histories. I also love to learn and teach about the dyes from my local environment of Southern California. Through this artistic experience, we bridge connections to deeper layers of meaning and wonder with our shared landscape.
